Introduction:

Artificial intelligence may well be deemed as one of the most recent milestones in the history of humankind. Humans’ faculty to design machines which can mimic the operativity of the reasoning of the species in neuron clouds is changing both individual and community behavioural trends.

In education, the integration of artificial intelligences in teachers’ daily practice and learners’ performance is also providing solutions to long-debated issues, while opening new horizons in the ways pupils scaffold their knowledge and skills.

Additionally, AI may also assume mechanic duties which exhaust human resources by occupying a great majority of teachers’ schedule. Assessment stands as a time-consuming activity which may be centralised by AI in remarkably efficient time frames.

Research goals:

The main goal of this conference paper is to explore the possibilities of Plickers visual recognition AI for the collection of relevant information from students’ performance, as objectively measured from the criteria and learning standards initially designed by instructors.

Discussion and results:

Plickers previews the testing of students’ acquisition of language and communication skills by permitting the design of multiple-choice questions in its webpage interface. The classroom creation feature allows teachers to associate given students with unique QR codes, which will be deployed to articulate their answers during the objective test.

Every QR card contains up to 4 recognisable QR codes into one single symbol. These will be interpreted as “A”, “B”, “C” or “D” depending on the position the QR card is displayed. Answers will be registered with the camera of a portable device, where Plickers App will be previously installed. Another noteworthy feature befits the exportation of the data collated to teachers’ computers for both storage and to proceed with the evaluation process.

Concluding remarks:

As reviewed in this innovation proposal, the burden of assessment, which may often exceed teachers’ efforts and divert time and energies from actual instruction, may be lightened by artificial intelligence products, such as visual recognition Plickers, which demand low technical and resource requirements and offer a fully functional free plan.
